Obsidian is a type of igneous rock that forms when lava from a volcanic eruption cools very quickly. When molten lava reaches the Earth’s surface and is exposed to air or water, it hardens so fast that crystals do not have time to grow. Because of this rapid cooling, obsidian becomes a smooth, glass-like rock rather than a typical crystalline stone.

Culturally, obsidian has been used by humans for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs used it to make sharp tools, arrowheads, and ceremonial blades because it can break into very sharp edges. It was also used for mirrors and decorative objects. Symbolically, obsidian is often associated in modern traditions with protection, grounding, and clarity.
