Woodwright's Whisper - DnD 5e Magic Item Homebrew

Woodwright's Whisper

Weapon (dagger), rare (requires attunement)

This slender carving knife has a blade of dark green metal etched with the rings of an ancient tree. Tiny wooden shavings occasionally appear near the blade and vanish moments later. Druidic legends claim the knife was forged from the heartwood of a treant king and gifted to master craftsmen.

Timber's Bane

The knife can cut through any nonmagical wood as easily as a hot blade through soft butter.

  • Nonmagical wooden objects have vulnerability to damage dealt by this knife.

  • The knife ignores any damage threshold possessed by nonmagical wooden objects.

  • A creature wielding the knife can carve through up to 1 foot of nonmagical wood per round without effort.

  • The knife cannot cut through living plants, awakened trees, treants, or magical wood more easily than normal.

Master's Craft

While holding the knife, you gain proficiency with woodcarver's tools. If you already have proficiency, you instead gain expertise, doubling your proficiency bonus on checks made with them.

As an action, you may touch a piece of nonmagical wood and magically shape it into a finished object. The object must:

  • Fit within a 5-foot cube.

  • Be made entirely of wood.

  • Contain no moving mechanical parts.

  • Have a market value of no more than 50 gp.

Examples include:

  • Chairs

  • Chests

  • Shields

  • Ladders

  • Canoe paddles

  • Wooden weapons

  • Decorative carvings

  • Signposts

The transformation takes 1 minute of carving and leaves behind a perfectly crafted item.

You can use this property 3 times per day, regaining all uses at dawn.

Artisan's Miracle

Once per week, the knife can create a truly masterwork object.

After spending 1 hour carving a sufficient quantity of wood, you create a nonmagical wooden item worth up to 500 gp. Any creature examining the item recognizes it as a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
