Wig of Impersonating

Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

This finely crafted wig appears mundane at first glance, though its hair subtly shifts color and texture when viewed from the corner of the eye. It was originally created by spies, actors, and con artists seeking the perfect disguise.

While wearing and attuned to this wig, once per day you can use an action to speak the name of a creature you have personally seen for at least 1 minute.  The disguise lasts for 1 hour.

The wig magically alters your appearance and voice to resemble that creature.

Perfect Disguise

While the effect lasts:

• Your facial features, hair, skin tone, apparent age, and voice become nearly identical to the chosen creature.

• Your height and body shape can appear slightly altered, but your size category remains unchanged.

• Your clothing, armor, and equipment do not physically change, though the wig creates a minor illusion that can make them appear different.

• Creatures inspecting you casually have no reason to suspect the disguise.

Flaws in the Illusion

A creature that spends at least 1 minute interacting with you may make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against a DC of 15. On a success, it notices subtle inconsistencies and realizes something is amiss.

Physical contact does not automatically reveal the disguise, though obviously impossible differences (such as touching an apparent beard that does not exist) may grant advantage on the check.

Voice Mimicry

The wig perfectly duplicates the target's voice and accent. You gain advantage on Charisma (Deception) checks made to convince others that you are the impersonated creature.

Duration

The transformation lasts until you dismiss it as a bonus action, you remove the wig, or 1 hour passes.  The wearer can change the disguise at any time during the hour-long effect.

Limitations

The wig cannot duplicate:

• Class features, abilities, or spellcasting.

• Memories, mannerisms, or knowledge.

• Magical senses or creature traits.

• Creatures of a different size category.

Curse (Optional)

Many Wig of Impersonating items carry a minor curse. Each dawn, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, the wig randomly chooses a humanoid the wearer has seen before and adopts that appearance for 1 hour. The wearer cannot voluntarily end this effect.
