Helm of Overconfidence
Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)
This polished bronze helmet is adorned with a magnificent plume and engraved with scenes depicting warriors charging heroically into situations they clearly should have avoided. While wearing the helm, you feel strangely certain that everything will work out in your favor.
The helm whispers encouraging phrases such as:
"You've definitely got this."
"How dangerous could it possibly be?"
"Statistics are for cowards."
Magical Benefits
While wearing the Helm of Overconfidence, you gain the following benefits:
Bold Action
Once per short rest, you may add 1d4 to any attack roll, ability check, or saving throw after seeing the roll but before knowing the result.
Fearless Spirit
You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Inspiring Confidence
You gain proficiency in the Persuasion skill. If you already have proficiency, you gain expertise instead.
Curse of Overconfidence
The helm is cursed, though not obviously so.
After attuning to the helm, you become convinced that your judgment is exceptional.
Whenever presented with uncertainty, danger, or risk, the DM may secretly call for a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw.
On a failure, the wearer becomes overconfident for the next 10 minutes.
While overconfident:
-
You cannot willingly retreat from a challenge.
-
You have disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks.
-
You must genuinely believe your plan is excellent, regardless of how questionable it may be.
-
You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks made to convince others that your terrible plan is actually brilliant.
Examples include:
-
Challenging a creature to a duel because "it looks tired."
-
Jumping across a suspicious chasm because "it's probably closer than it looks."
-
Assuming the suspiciously glowing red button is actually a helpful shortcut.
-
Entering negotiations with a demon without reading the contract.
The wearer is not magically compelled to act recklessly, but becomes remarkably good at convincing themselves that recklessness is actually courage.
Critical Successes and Failures
Whenever the wearer rolls a natural 20 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, they gain temporary hit points equal to their proficiency bonus as the helm rewards their confidence.
Whenever the wearer rolls a natural 1, the helm loudly announces to everyone within 30 feet:
"An unfortunate tactical setback!"
Removing the Curse
The curse may be removed with a Remove Curse spell.
However, many adventurers voluntarily keep the helm because they find themselves having far more exciting stories while wearing it.
Their companions often disagree.
DM Notes
The Helm of Overconfidence works best as a humorous roleplaying item rather than a punitive curse. Players should be encouraged to lean into the flaw voluntarily, treating it as a character quirk that creates memorable situations rather than a punishment.
A character wearing the helm should feel like the hero of an adventure novel who always believes they're about to pull off something legendary.
Sometimes they're right.
Usually they're not.
This item works particularly well on bards, barbarians, swashbucklers, and any player who already has a tendency to say, "I've got an idea..." right before the party gets into trouble.
