Traits
Mimic Voice. The crocotta can perfectly imitate the voice of any creature it has heard within the last month. A creature hearing the voice can determine it is an imitation with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Insight) check.
Hunter of the Lost. The crocotta has advantage on attack rolls against creatures that are surprised, frightened, or separated from all allies by at least 30 feet.
Bone-Crushing Jaws. The crocotta's bite attacks ignore resistance to bludgeoning damage caused by nonmagical armor, shields, or natural defenses. If the crocotta scores a critical hit with its bite, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion.
Unnatural Laugh. As a bonus action, the crocotta emits a horrifying cackle. Creatures within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks until the start of the crocotta's next turn.
Actions
Multiattack: The crocotta makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
Bite - Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (2d10 + 4) piercing damage.
Claws - Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
Luring Cry (Recharge 5-6): The crocotta mimics the voice of a trusted friend, family member, or ally. Up to three creatures within 60 feet that can hear it must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature is charmed until the end of its next turn and must use as much of its movement as possible to move toward the crocotta by the safest available route.
Reactions
Savage Pursuit: When a creature within 30 feet moves away from the crocotta, the crocotta can move up to half its speed toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks.
Ecology & Lore
Crocottas are infamous predators of lonely roads, deep forests, and mist-covered moors. Legends claim they were created when a malicious fey spirit cursed a pack of giant hyenas for feeding upon sacred deer. The resulting creatures possess the body of a massive hyena, the hindquarters of a stag, and unnervingly human eyes.
Rather than relying on brute force alone, crocottas stalk travelers for days, listening from the darkness. They memorize voices, names, and conversations before using their supernatural mimicry to lure victims away from safety.
A crocotta's den is often filled with polished bones, stolen trinkets, and journals taken from its prey. Some scholars believe they enjoy learning about their victims before hunting them.
This version is designed as a memorable boss encounter for a party of four 4th–6th level adventurers, emphasizing deception and isolation rather than straightforward combat.
